Hopkins is the kind of place that rewards people who can come and go on their own schedule, which is why driving to Hopkins, Belize, makes so much more sense than being dropped off by a shuttle and left there. The village runs for a few miles along the sand, the good restaurants are spread out, the drumming happens at the north end, and the best day trips — Cockscomb, Mayflower Bocawina, the Sittee River — all sit back inland off the Southern Highway. With a vehicle in the yard you can have breakfast in the village, be at a waterfall by mid-morning and back on the beach for sunset.

This is a Garifuna village first and a beach destination second. Keep that order in mind and you will have a much better trip.

Where is Hopkins and how do you get there?

Hopkins sits on the coast in the Stann Creek District, south of Dangriga and north of the Placencia peninsula. From San Ignacio the usual route is the George Price Highway to Belmopan, then the Hummingbird Highway over the Maya Mountains to Dangriga, then south on the Southern Highway — figure on roughly two and a half to three hours, depending on road works and how often you stop on the Hummingbird, which is the most beautiful stretch of paved road in the country.

From the international airport at Ladyville, you are looking at something in the region of two and a half hours by the same Belmopan–Hummingbird route. Plenty of visitors pick a vehicle up at the terminal and drive straight down; we deliver to the airport and nine other locations around the country, so you are not forced to start in San Ignacio.

The turn-off from the Southern Highway

The main access road to Hopkins leaves the Southern Highway on the east side, a short way south of the Dangriga junction. It is signposted, but the sign is modest, so watch your odometer after you pass the turn for Dangriga and slow down. The access road runs a few miles east through pine savanna and farmland to a T-junction at the sea: left takes you to north Hopkins and the drumming end of the village, right takes you south through the main village, past the school and the football pitch, and on towards False Sittee Point and the Sittee River area.

There is a second, more southerly way in via the Sittee River road, which also links through to Riversdale and the Placencia peninsula. It is a useful shortcut if you are continuing south, but conditions vary a lot by season — ask at your guesthouse before you commit to it after heavy rain.

What are the roads like around Hopkins?

The Southern Highway is paved and generally in decent shape, with the usual Belizean caveats: unlit at night, livestock and dogs on the shoulder, speed bumps at every village, and occasional patches of road work. Drive it in daylight if you can.

The main Hopkins access road has been upgraded and is normally an easy drive in any vehicle. Inside the village, the main street is a mix of surfaced and sandy sections, with speed bumps, cyclists, children and chickens — nobody should be doing more than walking pace through the middle of Hopkins anyway.

Where you want a bit of ground clearance is on the side roads and the day-trip roads:

  • The entrance road into Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary from Maya Centre is several miles of rough limestone and gravel climbing into the foothills, with a creek crossing or two. It is a slow, bumpy drive and not a job for a low saloon car.
  • The access road into Mayflower Bocawina National Park is unpaved and can be soft after rain.
  • Sandy lanes off the main village street can bog down a light vehicle, especially near the beach.

An SUV handles all of this comfortably. Something like the 2017 Jeep Cherokee is a sensible pick for two or three people doing Hopkins plus inland day trips, while the 2015 Jeep Compass is an easy, economical choice for a couple sticking mainly to paved roads. Travelling as a family or a group of friends? The eight-seat 2008 Ford Expedition swallows people, coolers and snorkel bags without anyone sitting on a suitcase. You can compare the whole lot on our fleet page.

Drumming: the heartbeat of the village

Garifuna drumming is not a floor show put on for visitors in Hopkins — it is a living tradition that happens to welcome people who show up respectfully. The north end of the village is the centre of it, and on most evenings you will hear primero and segunda drums working against each other long before you see them.

Several small drumming centres and families in the north of the village host sessions and teach lessons, and many hotels can arrange an evening for guests. Turn up, buy a drink, sit down, clap, and do not stand in front of the dancers with a phone. Lessons for visitors are usually short and informal; ask locally about days, times and cost rather than relying on anything you read online, since these are family-run operations and schedules shift.

If your trip lands around 19 November, Garifuna Settlement Day, expect drumming, dugu-influenced processions and the re-enactment of the 1832 arrival by dory. Book accommodation far in advance for that week.

What should you eat on the Garifuna coast?

This is the best food region in Belize, in my opinion, and it is worth eating your way through it properly.

  • Hudut — fish simmered in coconut broth, served with mashed green and ripe plantain pounded in a wooden mortar. The dish to order if you order only one.
  • Sere — a thick coconut fish stew, often eaten with cassava bread.
  • Ereba — cassava bread, flat and crisp, made the long way with a grater board and a woven press.
  • Darasa — green banana tamales, usually a breakfast item.
  • Fry jacks, stew chicken and rice and beans — the Belizean staples, available everywhere.

Many of the best cooks operate out of small homes and open on their own rhythm. Having a vehicle means you can drive to the far end of the village when you hear that someone is making hudut tonight, which is exactly how it tends to work.

Beach days, the sea and the cayes

The beach at Hopkins is a long, honest stretch of sand with sea grass in places and the Belize Barrier Reef offshore. It is a swimming, hammock and sunset-walking beach rather than a manicured resort strip, and that is its charm. The breeze is almost constant, which keeps the sandflies down — mostly.

Boats run out to the reef, to Glover's Reef and to South Water Caye for snorkelling and diving. Those are water activities booked through local operators, so confirm prices and departure times with them directly.

Plan for a Hopkins trip

  • Insect repellent for sandflies, especially at dawn and dusk
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat — shade on the beach is patchy
  • Cash in Belize dollars; smaller places do not take cards
  • Water shoes for the sea grass and the river trips
  • A dry bag for boat days
  • Long sleeves and closed shoes for Cockscomb trails
  • A full tank before you leave the Southern Highway — fuel is easier to find in Dangriga than in the village

Two useful extras

Plenty of people get married or hold family reunions on this coast. We also rent tables, chairs and tents and can deliver them, which has saved more than one beach event. And if the unexpected happens anywhere on the Southern Highway, our towing, recovery and freight service is a phone call away.

Ready to drive the Garifuna coast?

Hopkins is at its best when you are not watching the clock for a shuttle. Tell us your dates and where you would like to collect the vehicle and we will confirm availability and price by phone or email — send us a reservation request and we will take it from there.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a 4x4 to visit Hopkins, Belize?

Not for Hopkins itself. The Southern Highway and the main access road into the village are paved and normally fine in any vehicle. You will want an SUV with some ground clearance if you plan to drive the rough entrance road into Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the unpaved road into Mayflower Bocawina, or sandy lanes near the beach after rain.

How long does it take to drive from Belize City to Hopkins?

Allow roughly two and a half hours from Belize City or the international airport, going via Belmopan, the Hummingbird Highway and Dangriga, then south on the Southern Highway to the signposted Hopkins turn-off. Times vary with road works, speed bumps through villages and how often you stop. Try to do the drive in daylight, as Belizean highways are unlit.

Where is the turn-off to Hopkins from the Southern Highway?

The main Hopkins access road leaves the east side of the Southern Highway a short distance south of the Dangriga junction. It is signposted, but the sign is small, so slow down and watch for it. The road runs a few miles east to a T-junction at the sea: left for north Hopkins, right for the main village and the Sittee River area.

Can I pick up a rental vehicle somewhere other than San Ignacio?

Yes. Cayo Auto Rentals is based at 89 Benque Viejo Road in San Ignacio but offers pick-up and drop-off anywhere in Belize, including the international airport, Belize City, Belmopan, Dangriga, Hopkins, Placencia and other towns. Send a reservation request with your dates and preferred location and the family will confirm availability and price by phone or email.
